Temporomandibular
joint disorder

Varied causes, diverse symptoms, tailored treatments.

Causes et Origines

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull, can be of muscular or articular origin.

The main causes are: stress, trauma (falls, blows), a bad dental occlusion, the absence of one or more teeth, or a muscular overload caused by various factors such as bruxism, the continual use of chewing gum, onychophagy, as well as the intensive use of a wind musical instrument, or violin.

The signs of a TMJ disorder are varied: jaw pain, cracking and crackling when opening the mouth, difficulty chewing, limited mouth opening, jaw locking, facial neuralgia, migraines, vertigo, ear pain.

The treatment of choice consists of eliminating the cause of the disorder in addition to wearing a mandibular elevation mouthpiece, as well as the resort to physio-therapeutic care.
For more severe cases, surgery may be required.
